On the possible VV, M and other symbolic markings at Lacey's Caves, and at a possible carving of a head in these caves, published on the 23/03/2026

This article/blog post was written and published by Linden Alexander Pentecost and published on the 23rd of March 2026. This publication is completely separate from and unrelated to any and all of my publications, including others published recently where I have mentioned Lacey's Caves, and to my other article earlier this year discussing other aspects of these caves. No AI was used in this nor in any of my publications, this article was published on this UK website, and was published in the UK, the author is also a UK resident and lives in the UK. Like the text, the photos in this article have also not been published before, even though I have published other photos of these caves in another article earlier this year, describing different aspects to them. Tomorrow I will also be publishing yet another PDF book on a different website to this after having published several others recently, in the PDF-only book I will be publishing tomorrow, I will publish yet other aspects to the carvings in these caves which are not discussed in this article, nor will this article or anything else previously written by me about these caves be included in the PDF book I will publish tomorrow. The photo descriptions in italics in this article also contain a lot of important information not in the main text. This article on this page contains a total of 1768 words. The photos in this article/on this page were also taken by myself, the author. Note also that yesterday I published another unrelated article on another of my websites, which ended up being pretty long, titled: C1: More on ancient Kirksanton & Lacra & ancient language, published on the 22/03/2026. After I have published the upcoming new PDF-only book tomorrow I will publish some further things later in the week, and will also publish another (separate from the one on this page) blog post/article on this website you are on later today. Like the unrelated article I published yesterday, this article on this page contains 5 photos, but they are of course completely different from those published in the unrelated article yesterday. I also edited the photos and added the coloured circular shapes to encircle/mark out the carvings. Note that I also recently published an unrelated article on another website concerning possible carvings in the St Constantine's Cells caves, also on the River Eden, and have generally discussed these sites in much detail across many publications.

I wrote another article not too long ago about Lacey's Caves on a different website, the aforementioned other article being titled: 91: Lacey’s Caves: a modern folly or a prehistoric site? And also published on the 29/01/2026 . In the aforementioned article I give a good description of the problems with classifying this site, and I have written about it elsewhere too. I don't want to introduce the site again in this article on this page, but I will briefly say that, it must be an extreme coincidence that monks, and rich landowners, over much of Europe in the past, all collectively decided to carve caves, with church-like archways, into sandstone rock formations. Lacey's Caves is an example of one of these sites, said to be of relatively recent origin, but I am not convinced of this, as I go into in the aforementioned article and to a lesser extent I go into other aspects of it in other publications.

Today however (on the 23rd of March 2026), on the day when I will also publish this article, I noticed some possible carvings in Lacey's Cave which I did not notice before. There is a lot of clearly more recent graffiti in these caves, and I cannot promise that the M and W like marks I discuss in this article are not later graffiti, but I nevertheless think it is important to share and publish about them as possible supernatural protection marks or witch marks. If they are indeed witch marks, this may help to demonstrate that these caves might be much older than is commonly believed. In this cave there are also various other alcove-like features, which I have discussed elsewhere to some degree, but I have noticed that some of these alcoves which I did not notice before, may have other, more distinct shapes, some of which I discuss in this article, and some of which I will publish in a future publication, including discussing one aspect of this site not discussed here in yet another PDF-only book I am going to publish via a different website tomorrow.

Photo below: these possible markings are, from what I remember, located beneath a small overhang on a rockface to the right of the path as it approaches the caves, and just before them when approaching on the path from the north, the "longer route". Please take good care on this path as it is very unstable, or at least it was when I was there. The image below shows what may be later graffiti lettering, but which could also be a series of older markings. They look a little like a C and a K, although the C is drawn as though with three lines, and the K does not seem entirely joined up and looks more like a V marking agains an I at an angle. A further possible V marking can be seen further to the right.

Photo below: the entrance to one of the caves, I used a less zoomed in version of this picture in my other article specifically about these caves, but in the other article I did not zoom in nor had I circled the possible markings. The black circle or circular shape in the photo below outlines what looks like a possible M marking with two individual V markings below it, to the right of which are other possible V like markings, all interlaced. There are other M and W and V markings on this face, not necessarily visible in the photo below, which are clearly parts of later graffiti inscriptions. The orange circles or circular shapes in the photo below outline other possible areas of older symbolic carvings, with V-like markings visible in all of the orange-outlined areas, particularly in that to the lower left.

Photo below: one of the other entrances to Lacey's Caves, with lots of modern graffiti visible in places, the pink circular shape in the photo below, outlines an isolated M shape, which I think is less likely to be an example of modern graffiti, because generally people doing graffiti nowadays do not use single letters to sign their name, and also, given the large number of other M- and V- like markings in these caves, I think these signs could be symbolic and perhaps older.

Photo below: the outside rock face of one of the other entrances to Lacey's Caves. The upper white oval shape outlines what is probably a later carving, but the lettering is kind of interesting, with a V shape visible towards the right of inside this oval. Below it, the white, vaguely-circular shape outlines a W or VV marking. The orange circular-ish lines outline other possible V marks, with the two orange circular-ish lines to the right outlining possible interconnected V or other marks, but again these may also be later graffiti.

Photo below: a self portrait I took on a timer, with myself inside the tunnel straight ahead. Like the tunnel entrance in the previous tunnel, the arched-nature and church-like nature of the tunnels at this site is very noticeable. It was also a rather cold day for wearing shorts when I visited these caves and took the photo. The white circular shapes outline M symbols which do not seem to correspond to any greater more-modern graffiti inscriptions. There are many more M symbols visible in the photo below, but these seem to correspond to initials, for example the very large T and then M to the right hand side of the arched tunnel, and the somewhat smaller M with a J below it, visible to the left of the entrance to the arch-shaped tunnel. The yellow circular shapes encircle what may be other M, N and V-like markings, some of which may be multiple markings connected together. If I am correct about this, it seems that many of these markings are close to or around the dark hole shape in the wall to the right of the arched tunne entrance. This opening and some of the markings around it will be discussed in yet another PDF-only book which I will be publishing tomorrow, the content of which will be unrelated to that of this article and my other publications, but it will discuss this dark entrance in the image below in more detail, and will not contain the information from this article on this page nor any previous publication, the relevant section of the book to be published tomorrow will discuss only this dark small entrance in the wall and the V markings around it in more detail, it will exist alongside this article on this page, with both being important sources on these markings.

The photo below shows a strange area of holes in the sandstone towards the right of the image, why these are here, I am not sure, but in terms of possible carvings, I have outlined in a pink circular-like line, what may be a possible carving of a head or face, the head being outlined by the horseshoe-shape, and with what appears to be eyes, and a nose and mouth, and neck, visible. I cannot be absolutely certain that this is a carving of a head, nor can I be sure that it is not a modern depiction, but it is nevertheless very interesting, and I think an expression of the spiritual nature of this site. The orange circular shape encloses a possible box-like marking.

Lacey's Caves really do need a lot more research in my opinion, and I think that, if these caves are older than many think, it is important that the research starts now, and that any possibly older symbolic carvings are damaged no further by modern graffiti, which is extensive at this site. I hope that this article/blog post was an interesting read, it is dedicated to the ancient ancestors of the River Eden and Eden Valley, and is dedicated to all that I love.
